lyrics

Driving North Wales poem by Robert Dana

Off Anglesey the sea is blue and calm
Beaumaris where the curious walk in ruins
Herring gulls, a nose diving plastic kite

Up the coast we stop for tea
A pack of daws, wigged and black beaked
flutters from the sea wall
thieves and judges

In the late afternoon, rare sunlight
the water curls and flashes, crouched before it
Looking out towards ruined Ireland
listening to the English end their sentences with questions
I hunt the shallows for flat smooth stones
Behind me, the mountains fly their rags of cloud
...and in Welsh meadows, the cattle kneel down
to promise rain
